Bridge to Nowhere

I am afraid of heights. It’s almost an irrational fear. I’m not just afraid of being up high, I’m afraid of all the things my imagination thinks can happen. Taking this picture, took a whole lotta cajoling by my friend Ralph:

space-needle

We were on top of the Seattle Space Needle. The entire time I was standing there, I kept think that at any second the cement was going to give way and I was going to go tumbling to the ground. As soon as the picture was snapped, I ran as fast as I could to the opposite wall so I wouldn’t be so close to the edge. I couldn’t tell you what the ride in the glass elevator looked like…I had my face buried in Ralph’s shoulder for the ride up AND down (and I was positive the cable would snap at any moment).

This same fear translates to going over bridges. Not all bridges. The regular ones I can handle. It’s even better if I can’t really tell how high up I am. Unfortunately, on the drive between here and Texas there are a couple of REALLY, REALLY high bridges. And even more unfortunately, I always seem to be the one driving when we go over the higher of the two of them: the I-10 bridge over the Mississippi in Baton Rouge. This is the bridge:

This picture doesn’t even do it justice. As you’re driving on I-10, it looks like a mountain looming ahead. My heart rate quickens and I grip the steering wheel tight as I drive over it. I know the driver behind me is probably swearing like a sailor at me since I’m driving on the inside lane (the fast lane) about 10 miles under the speed limit because I’m sure that at any minute my van is going to careening off the bridge and plunge into the Mississippi 175 feet below. Meanwhile, my husband is sitting in the passenger seat laughing at me. Jerk.

One of these days, I’m going to learn not to volunteer to drive until we’ve safely driven through Baton Rouge! I can handle driving over the bridge as a passenger…I just close my eyes and pretend I’m somewhere else. I don’t think it’d be wise to do that while I’m driving though.
